CHARIVARI a fashion UPROAR

A documentary film recounting the story of one of America’s most influential high- end clothing retailers; from the inspiration for the opening of the first store, how it “grew into a retail mini-empire on the previously fashion-starved Upper West Side of Manhattan” to all of the ripples and waves it has made in the fashion world up to present day.

This is our 2nd sizzle reel for the upcoming documentary film CHARIVARI a fashion UPROAR.

Synopsis:

CHARIVARI a fashion UPROAR is a documentary film recounting the story of one of America’s most influential high-end clothing retailers; from the inspiration for the opening of the first store, how it “grew into a retail mini- empire on the previously fashion-starved Upper West Side of Manhattan” (Bruce Weber), and to all of the ripples and waves it has made in the fashion world up to present day.

Through interviews with Jon and Barbara Weiser, recalling the early days of Charivari with their mother, Selma (founder), we discover the intricate details of the boutiques’ rise to fame, the creation of its own fashion lines, its expansion and its legacy.

This is also a story of one of the worlds’ greatest cities, New York. From that summer of love, through the age of social media.

Inspired by the Charivari of NYC Facebook page created by Ric Spencer (a former store manager), which rekindled a camaraderie among former employees and regular customers, the film will also highlight a certain era in New York through news and testimonials of the day; including the celebrities who frequented the stores and the people whose careers it launched— painting a landscape of the city that never sleeps.

Weaving the art of fashion with the Weiser's personal history, Charivari became a landmark in time for American fashion and how it influenced an industry and dramatically altered the careers and personal lives of many.

THE ADs

After accumulating some of the many ads the Weisers’ commissioned for Charivari over the years, we realized there was no way we’d be able to showcase them all in the documentary. So we organized several of them chronologically to show how they established over time, a sophisticated, public profile in New York.

[The music track we used is called, "The Knowledge"—it was released in the 80s, during the heyday of Charivari]
