The Anticipation (part 2 - The Connection)
Miami from above
… When we arrived at the address, we approached a man unloading his vehicle of an impressive amount of tech, and were pleased to make the acquaintance of our “sound guy”, Mark Weber. Although we had been in contact with him, we finally got to meet him face-to-face, on the day of the audio “shoot”.
Mark pulled it all together, and the four of us headed upstairs where Jon greeted us in the hall. He graciously ushered us into his space of openness and light, everything laid bare, no dark corners. A prelude of what was to come.
His Miami home is warm and personal. He gladly could tell you the story behind every interesting object perfectly placed, on the coffee table, on the bar, and along the base of the wall. The apartment walls made of glass surrounded us, and opened us to the beautiful world outside; yet we were more concerned with, and anxiously wanted in on the world within his memory.
A Rough Patch in the Water
But right off-the-bat, Jon had a problem with our opening line of questioning: the questions pertaining to his childhood and the details of what living with his parents was like on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. “Who cares about all of that stuff?” He asked, slightly irritated.
Alarmed, even stunned, Yabee, Ric and I looked at each other wondering how we’d put him at ease and still get him to open-up about such valuable information… and we then quickly performed triage on our questionnaire in hopes of minimizing the damage it seemed we inflicted on our esteemed interviewee.
Of course, we won’t give away any of the interview here; however, the air gradually thinned as he came to realize the picture we needed to paint—after all, Charivari didn’t appear out of thin air.
We needed to know how the alchemy of these three creatives began, (not to mention their numerous collaborators) and how such an entity as Charivari came to be.
Maybe the level of anticipation was too high? Maybe he was on edge about what was to be uncovered? Who knows? But, to answer his question,“Who cares about all of that stuff?”—WE CARE. And we’re sure our audience for the film care too! About,
NYC in the 1960s
ALL • OF • IT
the birth of Charivari,
their family closeness,
the company’s creation and evolution,
being the toast of Manhattan,
and the future of fashion…
Now we need the dots to be connected.
We wanted Jon to be relaxed, and talk us through the events of his past. And he did. Sometimes even quite happily, he indeed connected the dots from a founders’ point of view—and he elaborated on their shared history.
All of the stories we’ve recorded and captured from the historians, their collaborators, personalities and former employees are now being connected from a Weisers’ perspective, and it really started to come together for us that clear, blue sunny afternoon…
Over time, as the sun increasingly descended in the sky, Jon spoke. We listened intently between all of the speedboats, the horns of the odd barge and cruise ship sailing out of the Miami harbor and out to sea. And as they embarked on their voyages, he guided us through this journey of expectancy, to a place of discovery and wonder.
